Baxter
10-year old MN Dog
Veterinarian: Jeff Nunley, DACVS
HISTORY –
Baxter has faced a long history of knee injuries since he tore his first CCL at just 2½ years. In March 2017, he had a TPLO surgery on his right hind leg, but his recovery was short-lived as he soon tore his left CCL and ruptured his meniscus. This injury led to a second TPLO in March 2018. To manage his joint health post-surgery, Baxter followed a treatment plan that included regular at-home physical therapy, acupuncture sessions, joint supplements, and B-vitamin injections every six weeks. By 2019, Baxter had begun daily carprofen to address inflammation and occasional joint pain. This helped initially, but led to gastrointestinal issues by late 2022. When he stopped Carprofen, he had increased discomfort, particularly in his right hind leg.
As Baxter's condition continued to decline, he showed significant signs of pain. He was struggling to transition between sitting and standing, and was unable to jump on the couch. As discussions turned to potential end-stage arthritis treatments like Librela, Dr. Nunley reviewed his X-rays and suggested that Baxter could be an excellent candidate for a Spryng injection.
DIAGNOSIS —
Joint pain from previous CCL tears and surgeries, primarily right stifle.
Gastrointestinal issues from long-term carprofen use.
TREATMENT –
Baxter received an injection of Spryng™ with OsteoCushion™ Technology in his right hind leg.
After his Spryng injection, the improvement was almost immediate.
OUTCOME –
Within 48 hours, Baxter was up and walking around, with his limp nearly gone.
After two weeks of limited activity, he resumed walks and started playing with his sisters again.
Baxter can now jump on the couch and hop into the car with ease, appearing to have "reverse-aged" by at least three years.
His quality of life has dramatically improved, shifting focus from end-stage treatment plans to enjoying swimming at the lake, his favorite activity.
